Finding allies at the intersection of food, art & activism: My visit to Olafur Eliasson

In October last year, I had the delight of visiting the studio of Olafur Eliasson in Berlin. Not only is this place a vibrant, creative workshop, but it's also a conscious community of people who hold deep connections between food, art and activism. There's a kitchen in the studio, where a team of the most thoughtful cooks prepare organic vegetarian meals for the whole team 4 days a week. Everyone stops what they're doing to sit at long tables and share a family style meal! Needless to say, these folks were SO instantly my people!! I cooked a lunch with the team, and it was the sweetest experience to have the tastes and smells of my mother's kitchen so alive in a studio in Berlin.

I can't tell you how joyful it was to see this long table of lovely people tucking into our lunch with gusto and appreciation!

One of the most beautiful things about this kitchen is their relationship with a local organic farm. The kitchen team has committed to use whatever is freshest and ready to be eaten, which means that meals are often a surprise. I love the idea of a kitchen whose menus are so deeply driven by ingredients. These carrots were sweet and so alive with bright flavour!

This simple squash with mustard seeds wins people over all the time!

One of my favourite things about this kitchen is Victoria, the incredibly talented and generous woman at the helm of this wonderful operation. We share a deep passion for beautiful, good ingredients and for feeding people, and I was thrilled to have found such a fun and committed ally.

Each member of the team is issued a jar so that they can take home leftovers. It warmed my heart to see how excitedly people were filling up their jars and not wanting any of this food to go to waste.

I will forever remember my visit to this special kitchen, and I'm constantly on the hunt to find another opportunity for me to visit and collaborate with this awesome community of artists, activists and eaters!

The team filmed some video while I was there and have put together this great little piece!
